NanoMega was formed in September 2005 to develop and commercialize 5 years of groundbreaking research work by Hsing-Wen Sung Ph.D. and his team of researchers in Taiwan. Under the guidance of a highly-experienced management team, NanoMega will develop orally administered insulin nanoparticles for less invasive and painless diabetes management.

Historically, the major barrier to the oral delivery of insulin has been the low absorption rate of hydrophilic drugs (such as protein) through the intestinal epithelium. Additionally, “tight junctions” in the paracellular pathway, restrict the delivery of protein drugs between the cells of the intestinal epithelium. In order to administer insulin orally, a reliably robust carrier system is needed to protect such drugs from the harsh environment in the stomach and small intestine.

To overcome these problems, NanoMega has developed a novel nanoparticule carrier system, composed of hydrophilic chitosan and γ-poly-glutamic acid. This system delivers  nanoparticles that can reside longer in the intestine and facilitate transient opening of the tight junctions between epithelial cells. The encapsulated nanoparticles can then cross the epithelium barrier and enhance the intestinal absorption of protein drugs. The end result: is a more naturally absorbed , more efficient delivery mechanism which effectively replaces the need for subcutaneous insulin injections, thereby providing a painless way to manage the administration of insulin in diabetes.
